Young Coles & Langdon was founded in 1828
by a former Mayor of Hastings, Alderman William Scrivens.
The history of the Firm is linked closely to the
development of Hastings in the 19th and 20th centuries.
We have interesting links with:
the rise and fall of Hastings Old Bank,
Hastings Grammar School (now William Parker School),
the Magdalen & Lasher Charity,
Colonel F.G. Langham who commanded the 5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion
of the Royal Sussex Regiment during the First World War,
Henry Spencer Ashbee - the erotic book collector
and even the local molluscs!
The story is recorded in Square Toes and Formal
written by Christopher Langdon.
